I.              Introducing Our New Hybrid Open Access Publication Model

In response to the evolving landscape of scholarly communication and the rising demands for broader visibility of academic research, the Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia, published by Axioma – Publicações da Faculdade de Filosofia, is pleased to announce a significant innovation in our publishing model. While our journal has historically operated on a pay-per-view basis, with access facilitated through institutional subscriptions (including JSTOR and EBSCO) or direct purchase, we are now introducing a new Hybrid Open Access option.

Our mission has always been to disseminate high-quality philosophical scholarship. At the same time, we recognize that many authors and their institutions now place a premium on immediate, unrestricted access to scholarly findings, and many funders explicitly encourage or mandate Open Access. In order to meet these expectations – and to uphold our commitment to bringing philosophical research to the widest possible readership – we have carefully designed a Hybrid Open Access model that retains our rigorous editorial standards and peer-review processes.



II.          What is Changing?

1)     Traditional Pay-Per-View and Subscription Access

We will continue to offer our established pay-per-view and subscription-based options. Libraries, universities, and individual readers can still access articles via our existing platforms or through institutional agreements, just as before.

2)     A New Open Access Option

Authors may now elect to publish their articles Open Access by paying a one-time article fee of 1500,00 € (subject to VAT where applicable)[2], thereby allowing greater latitude for sharing and reuse (while retaining the high standards and ethical safeguards associated with our publication).

The Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia follows a robust peer-review process, ensuring that every article – whether Open Access or subscription-based – is evaluated by expert reviewers and maintains the scholarly rigor for which our journal is known. Our high editorial standards remain unchanged, and your work will be published alongside other rigorously reviewed contributions in the field.

4)     Copyright and Licensing

By default, the copyright of published articles remains with Axioma. However, when authors opt for the Open Access route, the licensing terms are modified to allow broader distribution and reuse, in line with standard Creative Commons (CC BY 4.0) practices (while still upholding intellectual property rights and ethical attribution). This both honors the authors’ rights to their work and ensures that our publication policies reflect the modern academic environment.



IV.          How the Hybrid Model Works

1)     Submission and Peer Review

Authors submit manuscripts for consideration through our standard submission portal. Submissions undergo the same rigorous, double-blind peer-review process, ensuring fairness, quality, and academic integrity.

2)     Acceptance and Fee Payment

Once, and once, a manuscript is accepted for publication, the corresponding author will have the choice to proceed under the subscription-based model (no Open Access fee required) or to opt into the Open Access route. If authors choose Open Access, a fee of 1500,00 € is payable to secure unrestricted online availability of the article.

3)     Article Publication

After the production process is complete, accepted manuscripts are published in the same issue or volume, regardless of access model. Open Access articles, however, will be clearly marked and made freely accessible immediately upon publication. This ensures maximum discoverability through major academic databases, our own website, and relevant index services.



   V.          Combining Tradition and Innovation

We understand the importance of both tradition and innovation. Since 1945, the Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia has provided a valuable platform for philosophical inquiry, supported by subscription fees and pay-per-view models. This approach has helped us maintain the quality and reputation that our contributors and readers expect. At the same time, rising pressures in the academic publishing world – tied to funding mandates, global access needs, and digital technology – mean that providing a Hybrid Open Access option is no longer a luxury but a necessity.

This new offering seeks to balance the diverse needs of our community. Authors who prefer to retain the conventional publication route are free to do so with no extra costs. Those who recognize the benefits of Open Access, or whose institutions or funding agencies require it, can now avail themselves of this alternative with the assurance of sustaining the same level of academic excellence.
