Hybrid Open Access Publication Model

Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia

I. Introducing Our New Hybrid Open Access Model

In response to the evolving landscape of scholarly communication and the growing demand for broader visibility of academic research, Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia, published by Axioma – Publicações da Faculdade de Filosofia, is pleased to announce a significant innovation: a Hybrid Open Access publication option.

Traditionally operating on a pay-per-view basis—through institutional subscriptions (e.g., JSTOR, EBSCO) or direct purchase—the journal now offers authors the possibility to publish their work Open Access, while preserving its rigorous editorial standards and double-blind peer review process.

Our goal is to ensure that high-quality philosophical research reaches the widest possible global audience. The journal is indexed and referenced by the following databases:

  • The Philosopher’s Index (USA)

  • International Philosophical Bibliography (Belgium)

  • Francis-Bulletin Signalétique (France)

  • Ulrich’s International Periodicals Directory (USA)

  • IBZ – Internationale Bibliographie (Germany)

  • Dialnet (Spain)

  • JSTOR (USA)

  • PhilPapers (UK)

  • Latindex (Mexico)

  • Base d’information bibliographique en Patristique (Canada)

  • ERIH PLUS (Norway)

  • Crossref Database (USA)

  • EBSCO Discovery (USA)

  • SCOPUS (Netherlands)

II. What Is Changing?

1) Traditional Access Options Remain
We continue to offer pay-per-view and subscription access via institutional platforms and direct purchase.

2) A New Open Access Option
Authors may choose to make their articles Open Access by paying a one-time fee of 1,500 € (VAT applicable), enabling free global access and sharing under a Creative Commons license.

III. Why Choose Hybrid Open Access?

1) Increased Visibility
Open Access enhances reach and citation impact, making research immediately available to a broader audience.

2) Compliance with Funders
This model meets Open Access mandates set by many funding bodies.

3) Uncompromised Quality
All articles, whether Open Access or not, undergo the same peer-review and editorial procedures.

4) Licensing
Open Access articles follow the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license, ensuring proper attribution and ethical reuse.

IV. How It Works

1) Submission
Authors submit through our standard portal. All submissions undergo double-blind peer review.

2) Post-Acceptance Choice
Once accepted, authors choose between traditional or Open Access publishing.

3) Publication
All accepted articles are published in the same volume. Open Access articles are marked and immediately accessible online.

V. Balancing Tradition and Innovation

Since 1945, Revista Portuguesa de Filosofia has supported scholarly excellence. The introduction of a Hybrid Open Access option reflects our commitment to tradition while embracing the needs of today’s academic environment.

VI. Professional Standards and Global Reach

  • Indexed in SCOPUS, JSTOR, and EBSCO

  • Peer-reviewed by leading scholars

  • Long-term online hosting and discoverability

  • Aligned with global Open Access best practices

VII. Looking Ahead
